Loyle Carner is a 20 year old South London rapper with a real knack for hard hitting mutli-syllablic picturesque rhymes. His lyrics are the outcome of a difficult childhood for him and his family, with the passing of his stepdad in early 2014. One of his earliest releases ‘Cantona’ pays tribute to his dad in a very intimate and touching way. Earlier this year Loyle Carner shot a short video of the track for the BBC, which shows just how important family is to him. Check the video out below.
‘Cantona’ appeared on Loyle’s first EP release titled ‘A Little Late’. The EP is a collection of 6 old school hip hop beats by producers Rebel Kleff and Alex Burey, accompanied by Loyle’s story of love, loss and maturing into a man sooner than he expected. The opening track ‘BFG’ sets the tone for the whole for the EP, with a painfully honest hook of “Everybody says I’m fuckin’ sad, of course I’m fuckin’ sad, I miss my fuckin’ dad”. When talking to The Gaurdian about the EP, Loyle Carner said,
“That’s the most difficult battle of it, because I can never replace my dad – but I can try my best to fill his shoes. Oddly enough, he had size 13 shoes, so I will never quite fill them… but I try my best.”
His talent for painting a perfect picture with his lyrics leaves you feeling like Loyle’s best friend, you really can’t help but be moved by his sincerity and gut wrenching honesty, even though the EP is just 6 tracks long. Check it out in full below.

2016 has seen the continuing growth and success in Loyle’s story. His latest single ‘Stars & Shards’ has been deservedly very well received, getting its premiere on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show, and getting a healthy amount of plays and support from Apple’s Beats 1.
