M83 have become a chameleon of sorts in pop music in recent years, adapting to popular culture and constantly reinventing themselves to keep up with the changing trends. Although possessing an array of production, song writing and synthesiser knowledge, M83 have never really taken themselves too seriously, and 2016 seems to be no different.
Their album ‘Junk’ thats due to be released in April has the wackiest and daftest artwork to date (see image below), with cartoon characters and playful eighties font on a space backdrop, its clear to see M83 are all about having fun and enjoying music in a completely blasé way.
The first single released from the album ‘Do It, Try It’, is a joyful combination of musical ideas. Beginning with a rhythmic piano pattern which wouldn’t be out of place on a Supertramp record, the track just gets bigger and bigger as it develops. The vocals are smothered in creative effects and lean towards a psychedelic nature, whilst a pounding funky bassline gives the track a very energetic vibe. The builds are very modern almost EDM in style with snare rolls and filtered synths. Anthony Gonzalez (front man of M83) explained just why the new album is so different and ‘out there’, see the quote below…
Nowadays everything goes so fast and everybody is kind of throwing away art in a certain manner. People will listen to an album for instance and just pick a track they like to put on a playlist. They’re not going to take the time to listen to an album anymore because they have to jump on the next thing.
The single and indeed the album may very well marmite to die hard M83 fans, but even if you are not a fan, you can’t discredit them for trying something new time and time again. Take a listen to the single below…
