The Mercury prize is in my opinion what every music prize should be; a diverse selection of intriguing eclectic mix of arrangements, thought provoking song writing and gloss-free artists doing what they do best. This years 2016 nomination list continues in this historical diverse fashion, with everything from the legend that is David Bowie, to the gritty streets of London’s grime scene or the epic silky arrangements of The 1975.
The judging panel had this to say about their selection
“This is music to make sense of our unsettling times – heartfelt, angry, thoughtful and thrilling. The 2016 Hyundai Mercury Prize ‘Albums of the Year’ are marked by their musical ambitions, unexpected instrumentation and breathtaking arrangements.”
This year for the first time you will be able to vote for the first of six 2016 finalists online, with a final decision from the judges on the winner of the prestigious ‘Albums of the Year’ prize, on September the 15th.
